An atmospheric and breath-taking candlelit service of music, readings and prayers for Advent. The service starts in darkness with candlelight gradually spreading throughout the cathedral as the flame is passed from one person to the next. Doors open at 4pm. The service lasts for just over an hour.

Award-Winning Pop-Up Shakespearean Theatre Returns for 2019

Pop-up Shakespearean theatre in York

Step back in time and experience Shakespeare as it was in his day, with bloody battles, comic mayhem, gruesome murders and grand oratory!

Following its highly acclaimed inaugural season in 2018, Shakespeare’s Pop-Up Rose Theatre will return again at the foot of Clifford’s Tower in the historic heart of York from 25 June to 1 September 2019. Last year it played to almost 80,000 people, earning awards for ‘Best Cultural Experience’ and ‘Best Attraction’.

Four new productions of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays – Hamlet, Henry V, The Tempest and Twelfth Night – will once again transport audiences to the thrilling, intimate atmosphere of an Elizabethan playhouse, with plenty of breath-taking, spine-tingling, heart-stopping moments.

Outside the theatre, visitors can experience a vibrant, free-to-enter Shakespearean village, offering the finest Yorkshire food and drinks from oak-framed, reed-thatched buildings, an array of ‘wagon’ entertainment, minstrels and a stunning Elizabethan garden with ornate box-edged beds of cottage flowers, roses and herbs.

The Legions of Rome return to invade the ancient city of York this summer for the annual Eboracum Roman Festival. Book now to avoid disappointment.

From 31 May – 2 June 2019, Roman Eboracum comes to life in the beautiful York Museum Gardens with a Roman Living History camp, Kids Army, demonstrations and activities for all ages.

Visit the Yorkshire Museum to discover York’s Roman history through some of Britain’s greatest Roman treasures:

  • walk on a genuine Roman mosaic floor
  • see the statue of Mars – the finest example of a Roman statue ever found in Britain
